What is CEA?

The CEA is a major player in research and innovation, serving the State, the economy and citizens. It provides concrete solutions to their needs in four main areas: energy transition, digital transition, technologies for the medicine of the future, defense and security. Bringing together 20,000 employees and based at the heart of the territories, in 9 centers equipped with very large research infrastructures, the CEA benefits from a wide range of academic and industrial partners in France, Europe and internationally.

Missions

The CEA pursues an active innovation policy based on valorizing the work of its laboratories and transferring knowledge, skills and technologies to industry. As the No. 1 research organization in France and Europe in terms of patent filings (Clarivate Top 100 ranking), it is developing numerous partnerships with industrial players, thus contributing to scientific resourcing, the dissemination of innovation and the competitiveness of French industry.

The CEA is thus in a position to offer its partners - large corporations as well as start-ups and SMEs - an environment that is particularly conducive to innovation. To achieve this, it relies on recognized scientific and technological expertise, access to cutting-edge infrastructures and equipment, and the ability to provide tailor-made support for research partnerships. One of the CEA's main missions is to act as a link between research and industry.

I have a project, how can I get in touch with the CEA?

  • Access to multidisciplinary scientific know-how and expertise;
  • Access to biology-health research infrastructures and state-of-the-art platforms and equipment, for: clinical translational research, functional exploration and technological developments in digital technology;
  • Access to innovative technologies;
  • Work in project mode, from fundamental research, to the supply of prototypes and their validation.

At what stage of my project should I contact you?

At any stage requiring research work or access to certain technological resources

In the pre-industrialization phase, particularly for digital medical devices

What is the link between the CEA and project developers?

Themes concerned

The CEA combines fundamental research in biology with cutting-edge technologies to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and provide solutions in the healthcare field. It addresses several themes that can embed digital technology, including medical imaging, large-scale biology, molecular modeling and in vitro diagnostic medical devices.

In the field of digital health, its activities and expertise focus mainly on:

  • Data production: biomedical imaging, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics...
  • The interpretation of produced and modeled data and the identification of pathophysiological mechanisms and biomarkers;
  • The standardization of data acquisition processes and quality control;
  • The management and processing of massive data;
  • The integration and cross-analysis of heterogeneous data ;
  • Mathematical modeling of complex data associations in systems biology;
  • Securing data exchanges and confidentiality;
  • Responsible AI for advanced functions, recommendation and decision-making assistance;

The CEA offers a multidisciplinary environment where several scientific communities interact.

Examples of support for the digitization of healthcare system organization:

  • Data analysis and decision support tools, for example for clinics, patients and healthcare professionals, or for healthcare manufacturers;
  • Semantic text analysis for exploring a patient's DMP (Dossier Médical Partagé) file;
  • Solutions for trusted networks;
  • Savoir-faire in cryptography, blockchain, cyber security (CEA participation in the specific WG of the ANSM).

Development of new digital medical devices:

  • Automated and embedded biological analysis;
  • Real-life parameter measurement;
  • Therapy monitoring for e.g. sleep apnea, dialysis, diabetes.

Contribution to the development of new tools for exploiting medical data:

  • Identification or development of medical knowledge for integration into digital twins;
  • Modeling, simulation and personalized medicine decision support systems for oncology, neurodegenerative pathologies, diabetes, radiotherapy, infectiology and vaccines;
  • Proofs of concept on various healthcare application areas for e.g. access to distributed medical data, DMP, diagnosis, prognosis or prevention, therapy.

Accessible resources (database, observatory)

National infrastructures and analysis technology platforms enabling the production of high-quality data in the field of "omics" and multimodal phenotypic analysis. The CEA coordinates several national infrastructures (IDMIT website, NEURATRIS website, FLI website, Neurospin, France Génomique) and is a stakeholder in several others (IFB, FRISBI, MetaboHub, PROFI, Ibisba).

Reference centers and networks in biology-health and major computing and data processing infrastructures such as:

  • The CATI, the multicenter Neuroimaging platform;
  • The Service Hospitalier Joliot Curie (SHFJ) and its facilities and technical platforms;
  • The CNRGH, a national research center able to answer scientific questions requiring high-throughput sequencing and genotyping, thanks to the development and implementation of innovative and integrated technologies;
  • The Genoscope, which develops methods and projects for exploring biodiversity, particularly in massive DNA sequencing and bioinformatics;
  • The TGCC, infrastructure for very high performance scientific computing and Bigdata, operating multi-petaflop supercomputers.

N4HCloud :Infrastructure for the storage, processing and analysis of research-oriented healthcare data, connected to the major computing infrastructures hosted at the TGCC - Platform enabling the deployment of research projects in the field of digital health with the support and expertise of the CEA in various business areas (IT/digital, imaging, omics ...)

Platforms for the technological development and/or validation of digital medical devices. By combining sensors from microtechnologies, e.g. development of MEMS or optical sensors combined with biology-health skills to

  • Develop portable and automated biological analysis devices;
  • Sensors for real-life measurements on the person in particular for monitoring chronic diseases. One of CEA's strengths is the development of complete functions, from the innovative sensor to digital processing to identify a medical index;
  • Clinatec: for design, integration and (pre)clinical trials for innovative medical devices.

With a European ecosystem of excellence:

  • Hub4AIM : A European alliance in which CEA is a partner, supporting Medical Device companies to accelerate their development up to CE marking;
  • EBRAINS is a European platform providing tools and services that can be used to address the challenges of brain research and the development of brain-inspired technologies. Its components are designed with, by and for researchers. The tools help scientists to collect, analyze, share and integrate brain data, and to perform modeling and simulation of brain function;
  • FENIX a European research infrastructure providing access to computing resources and integrated services around data;
  • EIT HEALTH an ecosystem of 150 industrial and academic partners innovating in the healthcare field for more efficient healthcare systems. The CEA is one of the founding members.

Practical guide

All the questions you need to ask about CEA

Who's the right person to talk to?

Nora Benhabiles: nora.benhabiles@cea.fr

Do I have to pay for CEA services?

It depends on the type of collaboration chosen.

Can your organization support my project individually?

We study all the projects proposed to us. What's more, we work closely with a very strong innovation ecosystem, at national and regional levels (e.g. in Ile de France or the Grenoble region) with our academic and industrial partners, hospital structures and competitive clusters and, at European level (e.g. EIT Health).
