What is the Living Lab of the Institut National du Cancer?

The Institut National du Cancer is the French government agency for health and scientific expertise in oncology, which coordinates actions to combat cancer. In particular, the Institute is charged by the Act of 8 March 2019 with implementing the ten-year cancer control strategy (2021-2030). See this strategy on the website of the Institut National du Cancer. The aim of this strategy is to significantly reduce the burden of cancer in the daily lives of French people by focusing on four priority areas:

  • Improving prevention
  • Limiting after-effects and improving quality of life
  • Combating cancers with a poor prognosis
  • Ensuring that progress benefits everyone

In its desire to improve the service it provides to patients, caregivers, health professionals, citizens, and others, the Institut National du Cancer set up a Living Lab in July 2020 which is expected to enable all the players to meet, exchange and collaborate to find innovative solutions together for the benefit of patients by putting them at the heart of the process.

Missions

The aim of the Living Lab is to offer everyone the opportunity to contribute their expertise to developing innovative solutions, adapted to the reality of patients' daily lives, enabling them to live better, both during and after the disease. Through its Living Lab, the Institut National du Cancer wishes to:

  • Identify and develop innovative solutions based on the problems of patients and users of the healthcare system, because they know their own experience best
  • Create an ecosystem conducive to the development of these innovative solutions which will be immediately beneficial to patients
  • Strengthen and create new ties with all of its publics and citizens in order to improve the services it can provide to reduce the burden of disease in everyone's life

I have a project, how can contacting the Living Lab be of use to me?

The Institut National du Cancer has set up its Living Lab as a collaborative effort. Two services are currently being co-constructed with all stakeholders:

  • A website that accelerates and facilitates connections between stakeholders in the fight against cancer who have a project, and those who wish to get involved and share their skills and experience.
This solution must bring together all types of players in the fight against cancer at any given time throughout the country to co-construct and deploy solutions to real problems. To participate in this project, fill out the contact form on the Living Lab website: https://living-lab.e-cancer.fr/
  • A support program for start-ups dedicated to the fight against cancer. This 6-month support program will be launched annually (the first one in the second half of 2021). The methods for defining support in this program and selecting start-ups are currently being constructed. The topics of the programme will all be derived from the actions of the ten-year cancer control strategy. To benefit from this programme, a call for projects will be launched to prioritise projects with a high medical and social care value that have a direct (measurable) positive impact on health expenditure, improve the quality of life of patients and their carers, facilitate the course of treatment, etc.

At what stage of my project should I contact the Living Lab?

From the idea phase and throughout your project to find inspiration and skills from other players who also want to get involved in the fight against cancer, to measure the interest of the project with regard to the priorities of the cancer control strategy, to benefit from the experience of other players, etc.
